Determining the Pivotal Role of Muscle Myosin in Critical Illness Myopathy

More than 20,000 patients are admitted to intensive care units in Denmark annually, and a significant number of them experience muscle wasting and weakness post-discharge—a condition known as critical illness myopathy (CIM) for which there are currently no available treatments other than physical therapy. This leads to prolonged recovery periods and diminished quality of life for those affected.

In his project, Associate Professor Julien Ochala aims to unravel the underlying mechanisms of CIM by focusing on myosin, the most abundant muscle protein, crucial for developing targeted interventions and treatments.

The project's outcomes could lead to groundbreaking insights that may influence future prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, providing hope for patients with CIM.

We congratulate Julien on this well-deserved grant and look forward to the valuable contributions his group’s research will make to the search for effective treatments for Critical Illness Myopathy.
