Undergraduate and postgraduate education

The researchers at the Department of Biomedical Sciences carry out research-based, clinically relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision at several study programmes at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

The department's mission is to provide research-based teaching of the highest standards with the aim of educating future professionals.

We embrace that we do not learn by listening, but by practice and reflection. Hence, we seek to continuously develop the quality of our courses and supervision in line with the UCPH Guiding principles for education. We strive to transform our teaching activities to formats that foster safe learning environments and support student-centered learning.

According to the “Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities”, academic staff must create and continuously maintain a teaching portfolio as well as continuously develop their pedagogical-didactic competencies.

At BMI, the teaching portfolio, teaching plans, and visions are key selection criteria in the employment process (associate professors and professors).

The teaching portfolio and continuous professional development within education are an integral part of the annual performance and development reviews for all academic staff.

At BMI, research and research-based teaching rank equally. BMI’s academic staff participates in undergraduate teaching activities corresponding to (on average) 40-50% of their working hours.

Our staff supports the students’ learning by synchronous study activities such as lectures, seminars, practical assignments (lab work), and other – synchronous or asynchronous – student engaging activities as well as designing and correcting exams.

Most of our academic staff are involved in course management. We use research-based learning design methods and tools for developing our courses to more blended learning environments.

Most of BMI’s researchers are involved in supervision of undergraduate student projects with a strong focus on research integration. Students come from study programmes at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, but also other faculties at UCPH and Danish Universities as well as international programmes (e.g., ERASMUS).

You can read more about our student projects here.

If you would like to get involved in our research as an undergraduate student, you should browse BMI’s research pages and contact the principal investigator directly.

Most of BMI’s academic staff is involved in PhD supervision. BMI’s academic staff is also involved in management and teaching at a variety of PhD courses.

The department hosts around 50-70 students who pursue a PhD. The PhD students are primarily enrolled at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences. Available PhD positions are typically advertised at the UCPH job portal.

BMI hosts around 40-50 postdocs.

The department is active in the BRIDGE Translational Excellence Programme, both by mentoring postdocs and offering courses in the programme. You can read more here.

BMI is also contributing to the faculty’s mentor programme for postdocs.
