Obesity is on the rise and more people are now overweight than underweight. Meanwhile, obesity is a major risk factor of comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The link between obesity and T2DM is not clear, however systemic low-grade inflammation, which develops with obesity is directly reducing the body’s insulin sensitivity, i.e. the body becomes insulin resistant. Insulin resistance can be identified in obese patients many years prior to onset of T2DM and is therefore called prediabetes.
We study inter-organ communication and especially gut-derived signals, which can signal in metabolic tissues such as adipose tissue and liver via immune cells. With obesity, pathogenic immune cells infiltrate tissues and cause e.g. insulin resistance. We try to elucidate these signals and test how immune cells respond to them. Furthermore, since many gut-derived signaling molecules are produced by the gut microbiota, we study regulatory mechanisms of the microbial composition such as diet or host-mediated factors.
