I am curently working with the role of c-jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) in cytokine- and glucolipotoxicity -induced beta cell death. The JNK family comprises three subtypes; JNK1, JNK2 and JNK3. The JNK proteins are activated by a wide range of stimuli and are associated with increased beta cell apoptosis. The precise contribution of the individual JNK subtypes in mediating beta cell apoptosis is unknown. I investigate the role of the individual JNK members in mediating IL-1β- or palmitate and high glucose-induced beta cell apoptosis by specific knockdown of the JNK members.
