My research examines the molecular mechanisms which underlies targeting and localization of membrane proteins in neuronal cells.
By imaging of dynamic vesicle trafficking mechanisms in cultured hippocampal neurons, I seek to understand how neurons coordinate targeting to distinct destinations in their surface membrane. I utilize a selection of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels as model proteins representing trafficking to distinct destinations. These Kv channels are not only unique due to their compartment- and subdomain- specific localizations, they are also crucial in regulation of neuronal excitability.
